Visit Kawah Putih, a volcanic crater lake at the foot of Mount Patuha

Visit Kawah Putih - It had always been a dream of mine to visit Kawah Putih, a volcanic crater lake at the foot of Mount Patuha, near Bandung.

The natural wonder has been used as the backdrop for a number of fashion spreads and music videos in recent years, due to its stunning color contrasts and its isolated, middle-of-nowhere feel. I had only ever seen it in photographs but was captivated by its white sands and clear, blue-green water. readmore Volcanic (Crater) Lakes of the World : Kawah Putih

That is why I jumped at the chance last week to visit the crater with my cousin, who was making a trip to Bandung. We had been to Bandung plenty of times, to enjoy its shopping and culinary scenes, the hot springs at Ciater and the vistas of Tangkuban Perahu. This time, we vowed to make the drive out to Kawah Putih as well.

Located at the top of Mount Patuha, Kawah Putih is around 40 kilometers from Bandung, or a three-hour drive from Jakarta. The best way to get there from the capital is to take the Cipularang toll, exit at Kopo and head straight for Ciwidey.

Ciwidey itself is a fascinating destination if you have enough time to drop by. In the gardens there, you can pick strawberries to take home, or to eat right there among the beautiful mountain scenery.

There are also a number of food stalls offering strawberry-inspired dishes, including strawberry meatball soup, strawberry spaghetti and even strawberry fried rice. The food in Ciwidey is well-priced.

Not so for the entrance fee at Kawah Putih, as my cousin and I were soon to discover. We were shocked to learn the fee for the two of us to enter the natural site was Rp 180,000 ($20) — Rp 150,000 for the car, plus Rp 15,000 per person.

Visitors arriving by motorcycle only have to pay a fee of Rp 5,000 for their vehicle, so it is not clear why the fee for cars was so expensive. We begrudgingly handed over the cash and tried to enjoy the natural surroundings.

With such a mystical atmosphere, it is no wonder Kawah Putih has long been the subject of local myths and legends. Many people who live in the area believe that the crater is where the spirits of their ancestors reside. Before Dutch explorer Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn came across the crater in 1837, local people avoided the site because they were afraid of the powerful spirits.

The nearby Mount Patuha is also considered to be an ancestral site. Its name comes from “Pak Tua,” or “Old Man,” a term used to refer to honored seniors in society. The mountain’s other name, Mount Sepuh, means “the honored” — another reference to the ancestors.

My cousin and I took a walk around the crater, admiring its white, chalky walls and the hues of turquoise in the water. The water is colored by a high sulfur content and changes according to the weather.

Some visitors find the sulfuric fumes overwhelming, so it is recommended that a face mask is worn and no more than 15 minutes at a time is spent in the crater. Taking in the view, my cousin and I stayed for more than half an hour and soon began to feel light-headed.

"We've used the mixer to smooth the onion and pecans, but the result is not good. The smell of perfume did not come out," said Murtioso Salimoen (57), owner of noodles Jowo DU67.

Spices were added various material elements to taste like tomatoes, scallions, and fried onions. Also be added on egg noodles that are deep fried first before mixed with the noodles. Added also the first chicken boiled and then fried just before mixed with noodles.

Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn

Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn, S German born in 1809 in Mansfeld, was one of the great naturalist researchers of the 19th century. Called “The Humboldt of Java,” Junghuhn published his comprehensive account of the island entitled Java in 1853/54 in Dutch. It is a work comparable in scope and significance to Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles’ famous History of Java. [More...] From the outset, Junghuhn’s main interest was in botany, but his father wanted him to become a medical doctor. As ajunghuhn university student, he was involved in a duel and was sentenced to ten years in jail in 1831. By pretending insanity, however, he managed to escape in 1833, went on to join the French Foreign Legion and was briefly stationed in Algeria. He returned to Paris where the famous botanist Persoon advised him to enter the Dutch colonial service and go to the East Indies.

Once there, Junghuhn concentrated on botanical, zoological and geographical studies. He traveled extensively through the Preanger region, climbed most of West Java’s volcanoes, and in 1845 published his first book, Topographical and Natural Science Journeys through Java. His account vividly relates the difficulties of scientific research at that time-the tropical climate, the impenetrable jungles, and the inaccessibility of large tracts of land. His book also contains many of his beautiful drawings.

From 1855 onward Junghuhn devoted himself largely t the introduction of cinchona (quinine) tree in West Java, a venture that encountered a great many difficulties before finally succeeding. His first plantations were at Cibodas (Mt. Gede) and Pangalengan (Mt. Malabar), eventually quinine plantations thrived in many parts of the Preanger region.

Junghuhn’s intense involvement with the natural world is summed up in his profession of faith: “There is only one revelation and that is nature.”

Junghuhn died in 1864 and was buried in Lembang.

Mount Galunggung

Mount Galunggung is the volcano which dominates not only the skyline of the Tasikmalaya area but also much of the town’s history as well.

This volcano erupts at fairly regular intervals of roughly seven to nine decades. Between eruptions, lava plugs form in the crater, only to be blown out again with the next eruption. There was a catastrophic eruption in the year 1822, after which a lava plug formed and gradually blocked the vent. The next big bang came in 1894, and sometime after 1918 the lava plug formed anew. The crater fell silent, and by 1973 even all solfatara activity had totally ceased. But based on past experiences, experts predicted the next eruption would not be far off. And indeed it wasn’t. On 5 April 1982 Mt. Galunggung erupted yet again and blanketed the whole surrounding area in ash. Moreover, its dust clouds reached so high into the atmosphere that the pilots of two international jetliners who were not taking this too seriously found themselves suddenly with stalled engines. The volcano’s violent activities lasted for about two years before subsiding. Now Mt. Galunggung is quiet again, but the scars of recent events are still very much visible large areas on the mountain are barren of vegetation and more than five dozen hot springs are scattered around its slopes. Most of these springs are near the village of Cipanas, where they feed into the creek called Cibukur, sections of which contain nothing but hot water for several hundred meters. Further evidence of recent eruptions is the mining and quarrying of volcanic products, an activity which provides a live hood for many local people.Climbing Mt. Galunggung
A hike to Mt. Galunggung’s newest crater (dating 1982) affords a splendid view from the crater rim. There are two approaches leading to the crater. The one near Singaparna requires a climb up of about two hours and can be hot and tiring; the climb should therefore be undertaken as early as possible in the morning. The climb from near Indihiang takes less than an hour.

From the crater rim you enjoy a fine view all across the Tasikmalaya Plain. Imbedded in the mountain flank is the crater proper, with steep, almost vertical walls. In the crater is a lake you can climb down to and where you can even swim. The path to the lake initially leads along the crater rim to the south and then down.

Directions:

For the Singaparna approach, drive to Singaparna from Tasikmalaya (6 km) and turn right (north) at a junction marked only by a small police station just opposite the turnoff (from Garut, Singaparna is about 60 km). Once on the turnoff, you travel several kilometers on a rough road; a minibus can normally get through but a four-wheel drive vehicle would be a safer bet. The road ends at a car park where you enter the Telagabodas Nature Reserve. Nearby is hot water to bathe in. To get to the crater, you pass through an entrance gate, turn left, cross a small stream and begin the climb through the forest. It takes about half an hour before you reach a plateau with open bush and grass. Because of small deceptive erosion gullies, the trail is not always very clear here, so be careful not to lose the way. You walk another; half hour and then begin the last, steep climb to the crater rim, which takes another hour. This is a shadeless, hot and tiring stretch straight uphill across loose rubble. For the Indihiang approach, if you are coming from Bandung, turn right (west) off the main Bandung -Tasikmalaya road in Indihiang. The turnoff is through a portal near the market. After a dozen or so kilometers, you pass sand quarries and then the road gets rougher (four-wheel drive is advisable). A small car park is several kilometers more down the road. From here it’s less than an hour’s walk up the slopes of lava and ash to the rim of crater.

Maribaya Waterfalls in Bandung West Java

Waterfalls, recreation grounds and a magnificent gorge make Maribaya, just a few minutes east of Lembang, a very popular resort. On Sundays this is a particularly crowded spot. Minibuses and horse carts are frequent from Lembang. Maribaya draws many Bandung residents on Sundays because of the hot springs which are channeled into a small public pool and various private cabins. Some come here for the children’s playground and horseback ridding (about $3/hr.), and many just to have a picnic in the park.

A magnificent walk leads through the Cikapundung Gorge to Juanda Park, about an hour and a half away. The path leads first to a waterfall (unfortunately, no swimming is possible) and then in to the gorge. Farther on the path forks: left leads out of the valley again, up the slope and to an other fork where turning left takes you to an impressive view points just above Maribaya; the path to the right takes you to Dago. Walking further through the gorge you reach Juanda Park, passing Japanese World War II bunkers along the way. Another hike back to Bandung begins at the new car park posted “Curug Omas”, which is 5 km from the Lembang crossroads and before you reach Maribaya. This path provides far better views than the rail in the gorge. This trail, too, goes to Juanda Park or, some forty-five minutes longer, to the Ciumbuleuit area. Directions Go straight (east) at the Lembang crossroads and follow the charming tree-lined road. Some 4 km from Lembang the roads begins to dip steeply into the Cikapundung Valley. If you go by horse cart you have to walk this last downhill section. The Maribaya recreation park is 5.5 km from the crossroads.

Pelabuhan Ratu Beach

One of the two beach resorts on West Java’s south coast, Pelabuhan Ratu is quiet village in a remote area. This is a place where you have two basic choiceness: do nothing and relax, or drive out into the countryside and go exploring. Compared to Pangandaran’s beaches, Pelabuhan Ratu’s are neither as ample nor as inviting, and there is little opportunity to stroll or bicycle down quiet beachside lanes; Pelabuhan Ratu is, however, closer Bandung. [More...] To Fully appreciate the area, a stay of a couple of days is recommended. Pelabuhan Ratu is about 160 km southwest of Bandung and a 3- to 4- hour drive.Whereas Pangandaran is developing quickly and just as quickly losing its famed “small fishing village” status, Pelabuhan Ratu shows no signs of rapid development at present. Yet it should be noted that neither does it have quite the charm of Pangandaran. A favorite retreat for Jakartans, it is less favored by Bandung expatriates, mostly because the beaches and swimming are not as good as at Pangandaran. The south coast of Java, as a rule rough and inhospitable, is fabled to be the realm of Nyai Roro Kidul, the Queen of the South Seas. Though beautiful, she is not an entirely friendly spirit-she is powerful, possessive and many a swimmer and boat crew have fallen prey to her. Strong currents and undertow make swimming extremely dangerous.

Local residents may deny the danger, yet every year Nyai Roro Kidul claims her due.The stretch of road from Padalarang to Cianjur is crowded during rush hours, but the closer you get the coast, the less traffic there is and the more scenic the landscape becomes Near Cikembar is a vast Chinese graveyard, and after Cikembang are rubber plantations. As a “tourist” you have to pay a small fee to enter the village of Pelabuhan Ratu-local official will flag you down from their desk on the sidewalk. Inexpensive losmen are left and right, after which is the main part of town, a cluster of shops on each side of the road. The fish market is just around the bend, and beyond that are several small hotels and guest houses.

If you travel all the way to Pelabuhan Ratu, you will certainly want to stay at least a couple of days.

Legendary Tangkuban Perahu

Located in Lembang, this place is only within 30 minutes drive from Bandung (when the traffic is light). Tangkuban Prahu is actually a volcanic mountain. The shape resembles an upturned boat, hence, the name. (Tangkuban Prahu in Sundanese means, more or less, upturned boat) There is a legend involved in the creation of this mountain.

It is said that long time ago, there was a couple very much in love. They had a son called Sangkuriang. For some reason, the husband couldn’t walk around in his true form, so he was forced to assume the form of a dog. Sangkuriang loved the dog very much. One day, Dayang Sumbi, Sangkuriang’s mother, felt like eating a deer’s heart. Sangkuriang tried to hunt for a deer, in vain. In desperation, he killed the dog and took the dog’s heart to his mother. Dayang Sumbi, finally realizing that the dog had died, became extremely angry. He hit Sangkuriang, causing a wound on his forehead. Sangkuriang then fled, living somewhere else. Years had passed and Sangkuriang had grown into a fine young lad. Dayang Sumbi was as beautiful as ever. Sangkuriang met Dayang Sumbi then fell in love, not realizing that she was actually his mother. Dayang Sumbi shared the same affection, until she noticed the scar on Sangkuriang’s forehead. Convinced that she had found her lost son, Dayang Sumbi refused Sangkuriang’s marriage proposal. Sangkuriang persisted, so Dayang Sumbi asked him to build a big ship during the night. She thought Sangkuriang wouldn’t be able to finish this task. She was wrong—dawn was near, and the ship was almost complete. Dayang Sumbi then tricked the roosters to crow earlier, so Sangkuriang would think that the time was up. Sangkuriang was fooled. In bitter anger he kicked the ship aside. The ship then turned into a mountain.
